Special report: Unrest in Northern Ireland (Belfast)

Following a serious knife attack in Belfast on Monday, there have been riots and disturbances for two consecutive nights. Cars, a lorry, and a bus have been set on fire; homes have been damaged, and families driven from their houses. The police (PSNI) have deployed water cannons; 16 people have been arrested, and 12 officers injured. Cleanup operations are underway, and there is an increased security presence.

The victim’s family is appalled by the violence and has distanced itself from it. Many view the riots as having been stoked by online agitators—some of them far-right. The Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) has called on online agitators to stay out of the situation. The events are reminiscent of similar incidents in the past where tensions surrounding migration and integration escalated.
