The Future with Elon Musk

Elon Musk is once again taking on a role within the Trump administration—this time not as a cost-cutting czar, but as a co-architect of future US warfare. On September 30, 2026, during a “State of the Force” address at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced that Musk would co-lead the new Pentagon initiative known as “Project Meridian.”
The initiative is not primarily intended to draft new strategies or doctrines. Its mandate is to look years and decades into the future: identifying emerging theaters of war, determining the weapons and technologies US forces will require there, and establishing how these capabilities can be rapidly developed, tested, and deployed. Hegseth spoke of battlefields extending “from underground to beyond the Moon”—ranging from subterranean operations to cislunar space between Earth and the Moon. Specific areas of focus include advancements in artificial intelligence, autonomy, directed energy, robotics, and biotechnology.

Musk is leading the project alongside Palmer Luckey, founder of the defense company Anduril, and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. Emil Michael, the Department of Defense’s Chief Technology Officer and Under Secretary for Research and Engineering, is also providing technical expertise. A broader team drawn from industry, academia, and the political sphere will support the three co-directors. All three were present at Hegseth’s speech; an initial meeting in a secure facility was scheduled to take place immediately afterward.
Project Meridian is a study, not a new military command or a procurement program. A publicly accessible report and a classified annex are to be submitted within 120 days—no later than January 28, 2027. These documents will identify gaps and propose concrete steps to ensure the US maintains a technological edge. Hegseth justifies this move to look beyond internal circles with the argument that the best forecasts regarding future conflicts do not originate solely within the Pentagon.

For Musk, this marks his first formal return to government involvement since his time leading the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE). At the same time, SpaceX is a major Pentagon contractor, notably in the fields of satellite communications and space surveillance. Luckey’s company, Anduril, supplies autonomous systems, drones, and other defense technologies. It is precisely these business ties that raise questions regarding conflicts of interest: the study is intended to define future capabilities from which the co-leaders’ companies could subsequently benefit.
Project Meridian was just one of several announcements made at Quantico. Among other initiatives, Hegseth unveiled an Autonomous Warfare Command designed to accelerate the integration of autonomous systems into the armed forces. Whether Meridian ultimately represents a genuine strategic shift or merely a political signal to the tech industry will only be determined when the report is released in early 2027.
