The first visual impressions of the planned relaunch of Miami Vice have now been released. Universal presents Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in the iconic roles of the detective duo Tubbs and Crockett. Jordan appears as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs with a beard, a serious expression, and a leather jacket, while Butler is shown as James “Sonny” Crockett in a grey suit—deviating from the legendary white look of the original series.
Under the title Miami Vice ’85, the two actors take on the lead roles. Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) directs, and the screenplay was written by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler). Additional cast members include Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, Walton Goggins, John Leguizamo, Danny Ramirez, Andre Holland, Michael Irby, and Whitney Peak, among others.
The 1980s NBC series, in which Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas portrayed undercover cops in Miami investigating drug lords over five seasons, is still regarded as style-defining. Michael Mann shaped the series’ elegant visual approach as director and producer. He returned to the material in 2006 with the feature film Miami Vice starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, which failed to convince either commercially or critically at the time. The original series also significantly inspired the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Production of Miami Vice ’85 is already underway, with a theatrical release scheduled for late spring 2027.
