In Albania’s capital Tirana and neighboring provincial cities such as Korça and Durrës, violent clashes between student demonstrators and security forces have erupted for several days. The unrest stems from long-standing complaints about inadequate higher education conditions, rising living costs, limited career prospects, and widespread corruption allegations.
This wave of protests connects to the so – called Flamingo Revolution, which targets a controversial coastal development project involving Jared Kushner. Demonstrators unequivocally demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has been in office since 2013. During the confrontations, police deploy tear gas and water cannons, resulting in numerous arrests, injuries, and damage to government and university buildings.
Rama himself rejects calls for resignation, attributes the violence to the opposition as well as external influences, and stresses that such unrest could jeopardize Albania’s path to the European Union.
