Pointing with Sophie
The championship game the NBA never approved.
Halftime
The gym is full. The national anthem has already been played three times, because the DJ keeps thinking it is over. The United States of Dribbles are down 48 to 12, and the coach has exactly one idea: put the president in.
Trump walks on like a man who thinks the court is the Rose Garden. Jersey number 1, hair set to wind-tunnel, and before the ball even touches the floor he is already pointing at the camera. Not at the basket. At you. As if he just won a free throw nobody has taken yet. “Tremendous defense,” he mutters, still standing still.
Then Sophie shows up
Sophie Cunningham. Blonde, locked in, same point, same seriousness, as if they rehearsed it in the locker room: first him, then her, then the crowd. Official playbook, chapter 4: if you cannot shoot, point at someone.
Sophie points so precisely that three referees take a step back at the same time. One of them blows the whistle. Nobody knows why.
Trump grins. This is his moment. He lifts both hands like he is signing a treaty, except the treaty is a basketball that just bounced off his chest and rolled out of bounds. “Fake news,” he tells the ball.
The crowd loses it
People film. Somebody holds up a sign: POINT AT ME NEXT. A guy in the front row is so thrilled he forgets he came to support the other team.
Then the opponent. White jersey, number 23, the stare of a tax auditor. He points back. Not angry. Professional. As if to say: sir, the basket is up there, not in the lens. Trump nods with respect. Finally, someone who understands the rules.
Final buzzer
The score does not matter, because the scoreboard gave up in minute three. In the tunnel Sophie points at the camera one more time, Trump points at Sophie, Sophie points at Trump, and number 23 points at the exit, because he would like to go home.
Official White House statement, one hour later:
It was the greatest point in the history of basketball. Many people are saying that. Sophie too.
